Glasgow - City of Architecture

Glasgow's architecture is truly among the finest in Europe.

1999, the city was designated UK City of Architecture and Design: Visit Glasgow and you will be in no doubt why!

Glasgow’s elegant streets are lined with some of the finest and most beautifully preserved Victorian buildings.

The magnificent City Chambers, Glasgow’s municipal headquarters in George Square, stands as a proud statement to the city’s proud position during the 19th century as "Second City of the Empire." Around the city are unique examples of Glasgow’s most renowned architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (including the famous Glasgow School of Art), and of the equally gifted Alexander "Greek" Thomson. At the east of the City Centre you will be able to see the outstanding medieval Glasgow Cathedral at Cathedral Square where you can also see the Saint Mungo Museum of Religious Life & Art which, contrary to its appearance was built in the 1990s.

Here are some other outstanding examples of Glasgow Architecture

  • The Peoples Palace and Winter Gardens
  • Glasgow Necropolis
