gay friendly hotels in Glasgow
Home to Glasgay!, Europe's largest gay arts festival, Glasgow was recently rated the fourth best queer destination in the world. It's a dynamic, flirty and arty scene associated with the Merchant City in the east of the city centre.
The commercial gay experience ranges from the expansive Polo Lounge (0141 553 1221) and Moda (0141 553 2553) bar to the cheesy fun of Bennets and the newly-opened CoCo Club (0141 847 0820). On Candleriggs, Icon and Merchant Pride (0141 564 1285) are two stylish bars, boasting cocktails and cabaret as well as the usual house and disco. Close by are the Court Bar (0141 552 2463) , straight until the evening, and Revolver Bar (0141 553 2456), which has a pool table. Bars in Glasgow are usually open until midnight, and clubs may carry on until 3.30am.
The Waterloo (0141 229 5891), the oldest gay bar in the city, is on Argyle Street, a stone’s throw away from the Arches, where Burly (0793 035 740) is held. Designed to be cruisy, the night is aimed at men over 25, and demands a dress code of denim, sports, industrial, uniform, rubber, kilts and leather. The Glasgow LGBT Centre is close to the river, and you can eat and drink at the GLC Café Bar (0141 226 5050) .
Glasgow School of Art is the focus for the more mixed, arty, alternative scene, with its nights Divine and Record Playerz, and unsurprisingly, the bars at the Tron Theatre (0141 552 857) and CCA (Centre for Contemporary Arts) are homo-rich too. Continuing the theme are monthlies Utter Gutter (0141 248 3144) and new rock, sleaze and electro night Gutted.
Weekday party people are served by gay nights at Cube (0141 226 8990), on Mondays and Tuesdays, and Allure, at the Tunnel(0141 204 1000) on Wednesdays, as well as the first gay night in a Scottish students’ union, Gossip. It’s on Wednesdays at the University of Strathclyde Students’ Union.
